First Baptist Church of Cheyenne strives to have and maintain biblical leadership in the church. We believe the bible teaches that a biblical local church will be 1) Elder led, 2) Deacon served, and 3) Congregationally affirmed.
We believe that God has appointed two offices to lead the local Church. They are Elders (elder/overseer/pastor Acts 20; 1 Peter 5:1-4) and Deacons (1Timothy 3:1-13). We believe that Elders are male leaders who are apt to teach the word of God and meet the qualifications of set forth in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.
Deacons are those who meet the qualifications of 1 Timothy 3:8-13 and are to function as the hands and feet of the local church. The word deacon literally means “servant” and the only notable difference between the two offices is that deacons do not desire to be an elder/overseer/pastor, they are not “apt to teach”, and they can be both faithful men and women.
Members of First Baptist Church of Cheyenne are also an integral part of leadership. Members are to take part in the final step of Church Discipline cases where an unrepentant attender needs to be put out of the church (Matthew 18:15-18), and they are to recognize faithful servants of the local church and recommend them to the leadership for deaconning roles (Acts 6:1-6).
